Fit People seems like a weird name for a gym. Well, not weird, but maybe a little “cocky”. I can see how it gives off the impression of an ‘elitist’ gym where only super “fit” people are welcome.
Have you ever named a child? Naming your business feels a lot like it. We have 4 kids and with each one I felt so anxious when it came to giving them a name. What a huge responsibility! You want something catchy, strong and memorable, but also nothing that will be a burden to them throughout their lives. When Taylor and I were trying to come up with names for the gym nothing we came up with seemed to stick. Nothing fit. Pun intended. One night while I was brainstorming ideas and writing them in a Word Document, the name fitpeople found itself on the page. I looked over at Taylor and said, “What about ‘fitpeople’, but all lower case letters.” He paused for a second as he listened to my reasoning in the name. This is why we chose ‘fitpeople’….
Everyone has an internal battle going on. We have a voice telling us to get off the couch, to lose some weight or to stop eating so much junk food. This voice is challenging you to be better and to step outside of your comfort zone. This is the voice of your “fit person”. On the other side of this battle sits the voice of your “unfit person”. This voice is telling you to do it tomorrow, next week or to wait until the “perfect” time. This voice tries to convince you that you aren’t athletic or that you just aren’t a “gym person”. This voice is telling you to remain confined to the walls of that cozy comfort zone. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your experience in the gym is, we ALL share in this struggle.
Our name represents the struggle. It’s a battle against good verses evil. A battle between what you know you should do and what you want to do. Our name signifies a place where all who share in this struggle are welcome and our goal is to create an environment that gives the voice of your inner fit person the strength to defeat the voice of your unfit person.
At fitpeople, you won’t find a bunch of meatheads or size 0 models walking around. You will find people of all shapes, sizes, ages, stages of life and varying fitness levels working out together with one common goal…
To step outside the comfort zone & into the dark forest because it’s in the forest where you find your best self.
