Before you join your first class we require that you complete an initial assessment. This sounds scary, but it’s designed with your best interest in mind. We promise to make it as fun and stress free as possible. 😎
We call this assessment the Submaximal PrimalFit. For those who want it and are ready for it, we do maximal assessments too. Stay tuned for more information on that. 😉
In your first year of membership at fitpeople, you will complete one of these assessments every 3-4 months. The completion of these assessments depends on the number of times you work out each week and how consistent your class attendance is each month.
The initial assessment is completely free! You can schedule a time during the week (our schedule is pretty flexible). We are here to give you as much information as possible to help you decide whether or not fitpeople is the place for you. You will not be pressured to join after the assessment is over. We promise!
We like to get an assessment completed before your first class because we consider ourselves your personal trainers. It’s important to get to know you so that we can give you workouts that meet you where you are. We want the workouts to be tailored to your current fitness level and we want our trainers to be prepared to make modifications according to your specific needs.
Most people schedule an assessment via email, phone or text. Click here to be directed to our assessment form. You will be paired with one of our trainers based on your preference (male or female) for this initial assessment. This trainer will get as much information as possible and will pass it along to the other trainers so that everyone will be properly prepared if you happen to join one of their classes.
What to wear:
For the assessment we recommend that you wear something that you would be comfortable completing a class/workout in. Tennis shoes, running shoes or closed toe shoes are required.
What to bring:
It may be helpful to bring something to hydrate with during this process. The assessment is not too laborious, but you may want something to drink at various times throughout it. Some people like to have their own towels, but we will provide one if you need it.
What to expect:
We start off the assessment by taking the first 5-10 minutes to go through a health history questionnaire and get all information about your past experience, current/previous injuries, etc. Once we have gotten this information recorded then we will begin the actual testing portion.
We begin by taking your resting heart rate and blood pressure. From here we move on to the body composition test. This test shows us the breakdown of your weight and measures body fat percentage and lean tissue. After the body composition test, we run through a series of movements that measure range of motion throughout the body.
At this point we’re halfway through the testing portion and ready to move on to everyone’s favorite part, the “cardio” test. 🤪 The cardiorespiratory assessment is a submaximal test designed to give us more information on the health of your heart. This is one of our favorite tests because it gives us such great information to work with. After completing this test we give you a few minutes to let your heart rate come down and grab some water before we finish the remaining two tests. The last two tests measure muscular strength and muscular endurance. Both tests are quick and easy.
After completing all the assessments described above, we head back to the office to find out what house you have scored in and explain your results. 🥳We go through each assessment and answer any questions that you may have.
In total, the assessment generally takes about an hour. It’s a lot of time, but we feel like it’s necessary in order for us to give you workouts that are both safe and effective. We want to write workouts for you that are challenging, but also appropriate for your current fitness level.
At this point, the ball is in your court. Like I mentioned before, there is no obligation to join. We want fitpeople to be the place for you, but we understand that won’t be the case for everyone.
We know it’s scary to step outside that comfort zone, but if your inner “fit person” is pushing you to do something hard then we’re here to help! The hardest part is always getting started, but once you get going you’ll wonder why it took you so long to walk through that door. 💪🏼
